Educating school children about beef and agriculture is a priority of the Delaware Beef Advisory Board. Through the Board’s Ag in the Classroom and Delaware Agri‑Mentor programs, teachers and children are educated about beef nutrition, food safety, and the beef industry. If you are interested in a classroom program, contact Judith Leith, Program Coordinator at 302-698-4519 or by email at Judith@dda.state.de.us If you, as a student, would like to learn more about beef, please ask your instructor to include material from the Beef trunk into your curricula. So, when is a cow more than a cow? When we depend on its resources to enhance our daily lives. Not only do cattle provide us with great tasting meat but they also help the environment and provide us with many by-products. Cattle Enhance the Environment: Cattle graze on land that can’t be used for anything else because the terrain is too steep or hilly for building houses, or too rocky or dry for growing food crops. Cattle Improve Grass and Reduce Erosion: Pressing grass seed into the soil. This is important because grass seed needs to be surrounded by soil to start growing. Cattle are Recyclers: In addition to grazing on grass, cattle eat non-edible by-products of food production such as potato skins, fruit pits, almond hulls and sugar beet pulp greatly reducing the amount of waste that goes into our nation’s landfills. Cattle are Fire-Fighters: When cattle graze, they reduce the length of the grass, just as a human does when he or she mows the lawn. This is very helpful in reducing the spread of wildfires since there is less material on the ground to burn. Cattle Provide Us With Nutritious Beef: Beef contains essential nutrients necessary for good health. Pharmaceuticals: Since cattle are organically similar to humans, our bodies easily accept medication or a treatment made with animal components. One of many medicines with is a beef by-product is insulin used for treating diabetes or high blood sugar. Household Products: No matter where you live, you likely have several products made from cattle by-products in your home. These items include: Crayons, candles, paints, paper, plastics and linoleum. Travel: Cattle by-products help to get us where we’re going. Antifreeze contains glycerol derived from fat. Beef fats and proteins are used to make auto and jet lubricants, outboard engine oil, high-performance greases, and brake fluid. To learn more about beef, check out the interactive GAMES!
BARN TOURS AT THE DELAWARE STATE FAIR Barn tours at the Delaware State Fair are a great way to learn more about beef. Sponsored in-part by the Delaware Beef Advisory Board, tours of the beef barns and exhibits provide the public with an educational, hands-on experience. Tour guides from Barn Tours tm present general facts and figures about beef and dairy cattle breeds, as well as information on Delaware beef production. Fairgoers have the opportunity to view cattle and watch the milking process. The young and old alike find barns tours a most entertaining way to learn about the agriculture industry.
